In 1930, there was organized the Institute of Zoology and Biology of the
All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (AUAS) in Kiev. It was composed of the
F.Z.Omel'chenko Biological Institute, the Zoological Museum and
the Zoological Chairs of the AUAS (the Chair of experimental Zoology
in Kiev and the Chair of animal morphology with the Primorscaya
Biological Station in Odessa), the Kharcov and Odessa Branches,
each of 4 sectors.
The first director of the Institute was I.I.Schmalhausen (1930-1941).
Since 1987, the Institute is headed by I. A. Aikimov, Corresponding
member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU).
A structure of the Institute has repeatedly changed during 60 years
of its existence. A number of its Departments have served as bases
for the formation of the Institute of Hydrobiology of the NASU (1939)
and the Institute of Entomology and Phytopathology of the NASU (1946)
- now the Ukrainian Institute for Protection of Plants.
Nowadays, the Institute consists of 16 scientific departments working
in which are more than 200 scientific workers including one Member and
four Corresponding members of the NASU.
In 1967, the Institute has established a scientific journal,
"Vestnik Zoologii".
The Institute has the Specialized Scientific Council for approving Doctor's
Theses (on specialities "zoology" and "entomolo-gy").
The Institute possesses stations and posts in a number of regions of the
Ukraine, it also includes (since 1958) the Black-Sea Biospheric Preserve.
The Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the NASU is a basis for activities
of numerous scientific councils and societies: the Scientific Council
on the problem "Rational Using the Resources of Animal Kingdom under
the Conditions of Intense Nature-Utilization", the Ukrainian Entomologic
Society, the Ukrainian Republican Scientific Society of Parasitologists,
the Ukrainian Theriological Society, the Ukrainian Ornitholo-gical Society.
The principal scientific direction of the Institute is the study and
protection of animal kingdom and rational using its resources under
the conditions of intense nature-utilization. In the frames of these
di-rections, special attention is paid to:
- history, cadastre and maintenance of the biological diversity of
animal kingdom in the south-west of the European part of the USSR;
- zoological grounds of rising the productivity and protection of
plants and animals against vermin and diseases.
