RESISTANCE OF THE WINTER WHEAT TO PEST ORGANISMS IN THE FOREST-STEPPE ZONE OF UKRAINE

Summary:

The study has been conducted in nurseries of breeding centers, in a plot of increased loading by pest organisms, in the conditions of artificial infestation by the Hessian fly, and fields of wheat growers. It has been shown that in the wide range of winter wheat entries, they are relatively resistant to nearly all the pest insects on condition that they are grown at proper cultural practices. Density of pest insects on them does not reach an economic threshold of damage with a little exception. Factors of the resistance are embraced by the complex of traits of the so-called varieties of high intensity, and at breeding of such varieties the resistance arises by itself. The problem consists in maintenance of the resistance in spite of activity of diverse causes, which contribute pest organisms to overcome it. Therefore, it is proposed the breeding measures that promise keeping the resistance and enhancing its expression. They would serve for partial self-protection of the winter wheat against other pest organisms - pathogens, weeds and phytonematodes, i.e. give prospects as to a multilateral resistance. It is advisable to test breeding strains in conditions of increased loading by pest organisms that gives a possibility to check the resistance and to conduct a selection of resistant plants within a strain. The crop's resistance and proper cultural practices allow to decrease significantly the usage of pesticides at winter wheat growing.
