"...In fall 1974, it was published the government resolution about the program "Zvezda", which ordered re-supply all the ships of Navy of USSR with new hydroacoustic complexes. The Research Institute of Hydroapparatuses (Director - Yuryi Vladimirovich Burau, Head engineer - Vladimir Ivanovich Kritsin) was appointed as the ruling organization for realization of this program. Oleg Mikhailovich Aleshchenko was appointed as The head constructor. This was the work of multilateral plans. It was necessary to develop for diverse classes of above-water ships (large, middle, little) a number of the combined multicanal cipher hydroacoustic complexes, which had the several tens of thousands of space and time entering canals for receiving of information. The preliminary evaluations showed that for this aim, it needed the computing systems with output of several millions of operations per second, and a volume of applied programming would equaled nearly million of commands. The developing of this program was complicated by necessity in large nomenclature of memory's equipments, diverse periphery (monitors, indicators of circumstances, self-recorders, sundry printers), and demands as to high reliability. The projects of such a complication were not performed in that time both in USSR and abroad.
In 1978-1979, due to activity of Oleg M.Aleshchenko, the Department of computer technique under direction by V.Yu. Lapiy was organized in the Scientific and Research Institute "Gidropribor". Soon after, this department was reformed in the Branch, and V.Yu. Lapiy became the Deputy of the General constructor as to development of the program and technical complex. It was concluded to build "Zvezda" as a multi-machine complex on the base of eight computers "Ataka" of Ministry of ship industry of USSR, and attended by them several specialized processors of real time. They got a base of the cipher space and time processing (spectral, correlative, and coherent) of the complex "Zvezda".
Under management of Oleg M.Aleshchenro and Viktor Yu.Lapyi over three years, it was built three potent computing complexes. Firstly in hydroacoustics, it was developed the way of the specialized parallel multicanal computing complexes.
In 1984, the works on the hydrolocator were completed. The entire complex occupied 200 of equipment's cupboards. It was prepared nearly million commands for providing of operation of the computer part (40 cupboards). The cost of this elaboration equaled 100 million rubles*. In 1985, the complex was taken in armament and passed on serial factory. The constructors of the complex were awarded by State Premium of USSR (Burau, Aleshchenko and others)."
*In 1980-ies, a ruble had purchasing power, which exceeded greatly a USD.
