The Institute of Archaeology is the foremost Ukrainian research body in the field of the archaeology and the ancient history studies. Nowadays the 120 research fellows are working at the Institute, that is more than 70 percent of the Ukrainian experts-archaeologists with the advanced degrees. The institute has the following structure:
1.Department of the Primitive Archaeology(sectors of the Stone Age and the Bronze Age Archaeology).
2.Depertment of the Scythian and the Antique Archaeology(Sectors of the Scythian and of the Antique Archaeology).
3.Department of the Slavonic Archaeology.
4.Department of the Old Rus and Medieval Archaeology.
5.Department of the North-Western Pontic Archaeology.
6.The Museum of Archaeology.
7.Depertment of the Lower riwer Bug Basin Area-"Olbia" Preserve.
8.Department of the Protective Archaeological Research.
During the past few years the main Institutes activity has been focused on the developments of the research themes devoted to the economical and cultural relations of the Ukrainian area population in the Stone Copper-Bronze periods, to the problems of the Cimmerian and the Scythian history, to the culture of the Ancient Greece in the Norhern Black Sea Coast region and to the ethnogenesis and the ancient history of the Slavs, to the social and economical development of the Old Rus town and village.
